Eco-friendly marking and coding with halogen-free inks

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Developing environmentally-friendly print and apply system inks is among the key goals of Markem-Imaje’s dedicated 300-member research and development team.

In line with Markem-Imaje’s commitment to comply with the RoHS Directive, the R & D team has recently been focused on developing labelling solutions that meet the Directive’s halogen-free recommendations.

Removing halogen-related substances in the ink used by industrial ink jet printers to mark electric wire cables will improve the safety of all workers and recycling-linked operations.

Markem-Imaje’s halogen-free inks are available in a variety of colours including black, white, red and brown. They are appropriate for use in all types of industrial ink jet printers and bar code equipment sold by Markem-Imaje in Australia and New Zealand.

As a global leader in the marking and coding industry, Markem-Imaje has been actively pursuing new eco-friendly print apply systems and inks since 1997. Customers interested in Markem-Imaje’s halogen-free inks can find out more on 1300 730 428.

Marking and Coding Depends on Materials

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Flexible plastics are the No 1 materials used by Markem-Imaje’s clientele in Australia and New Zealand. Flexible plastics are commonly used in food packaging for products such as muesli bars and sugar sachets. Among the best marking and coding equipment for flexible plastics is the CIJ bar code printer, which is ideal for large manufacturing clients requiring consistent, high-speed marking and coding for their food and beverage packaging.

Other common materials used by Markem-Imaje’s clients include cans and glass. The chemical composition of packing materials directly influences the type of marking and coding equipment used. For example, a laser marking system can be not used on cans as there is a risk of melting the thin aluminum used in this form of beverage packaging.

Markem-Imaje’s consultants can offer advice on the best and most cost effective labelling solutions for their clients depending on the materials used for their packaging.

Elegant and Discreet marking and coding for Absolut Vodka

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Markem-Imaje works with individual clients to develop unique labelling solutions for products requiring direct marking and coding on their packages. This was the case with prestige beverage brand, Absolut Vodka, which required very discreet marking and coding on its range of stylish frosted glass bottles.

Absolut Vodka Equipment Engineer, Bjorn Lindberg, said the company began looking for a new marking and coding equipment supplier when it developed Absolut Vanilia, which was produced in a very hard frosted glass bottle. Their existing dot matrix laser marking and coding equipment was unable to print on this surface, so they sought advice from Markem-Imaje, the world’s leading marking and coding company.

The S8 ink jet printers and Lightjet Vector laser coders proved the best solution, printing two codes on the glass and cap to meet traceability requirements while not detracting from the look of the bottle.

“Because Absolut Vodka is a prestigious product, these two codes had to be both as discreet and elegant as possible,” Mr Lindberg said.

2000 Series print and apply ideal for Kraft

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Milk chocolate manufacturer, Kraft, required a new labelling solution when it changed its packaging to re-sealable packs and developed shelf-ready display cases.

With rising levels of production and greater automation, Kraft needed a reliable print and apply system that could manage its faster line speeds. It specifically wanted near 100% coding system availability with a labelling capacity of 60 cases per minute. With individual packing stations feeding the line, products for different customers in different countries had to be simultaneously labelled in the correct format and sequence using just 800mm of space.

The Markem-Imaje 2000 Series print and apply systems were ideal. Kraft’s Productivity Development Manager, Uwe Ruf, described Markem-Imaje’s 2000 Series bar code equipment as “reliable and easy to operate” and “meeting all the demands we place on them”.
